CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR A NEW GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP IN BASQUE FAMILY HISTORY

The CBS is delighted to announce the creation of a new, four-year graduate assistantship ($16,000 per annum) for a Ph.D. student (the Campos Graduate Assistant) in Basque Studies. Applications should be sent to Dr. Sandra Ott at the Center for Basque Studies, MS/2322, University of Nevada, Reno, Reno, NV 89557 by March 16, 2012. Please see the instructions for applicants posted on this website under "Tutorial Ph.D." Under this new scheme, the Campos Graduate Assistant will conduct doctoral research on Basque family history in the diaspora. Such research might include the construction of Basque genealogies, oral histories, studies of migration, inheritance practices, gender, work, mobility and marriage patterns among the Basques. A Master’s degree in Oral History or History is required.

Gema Egaña, wife of José Ramón Cengotitabengoa, died of cancer on January 27. Gema was a long-time donor and friend of the Center for Basque Studies. We will miss her dearly. In 1985 Gema and José Ramón loaned to the Center Nestor Basterretxea’s “Orreaga,” an impressive sculpture that was displayed at the main entrance of the University of Nevada, Reno Getchell Library until it closed in 2008. Currently it is scheduled to be placed in the new library, in the entrance rotunda of the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center. In 2008 Gema and José Ramón disposed that Remigio Mendiburu’s “Gaztelu,” another magnificent piece displayed in Elko since 1985, be placed in the new premises of CBS in the UNR’s Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center. These two sculptures bear an essential presence to the Center’s aesthetic and intellectual work, and our gratitude to Gema and José Ramón for them is everlasting. Besides the loaning of these two unique works of art, José Ramón and Gema were the driving force behind the installation of the Monument to the Basque Sheepherder inaugurated in 1989 in Rancho San Rafael Park, Reno. When the Center created an Advisory Board in the year 2000, José Ramón was one of the inaugural members; he and Gema made generous donations to the Center’s Endowment. The Center will always be thankful to Gema Egaña’s generosity and friendship. Goian bego.

The UNR Center for Basque Studies is organizing an international conference with the title “Play, Games and Sports: Bodies of Practice, Communities of Desire” between 19-21 April, 2012. This conference is held to reflect on play, games and sports as dislocating, subversive realms of social and subjective relevance.
