Durangoko Azoka 1993

Cold weather, drizzling rain, and no parking. Not the ideal recipe for a vacation, but on the other hand Marcelino Ugalde’s trip to Durango (Bizkaia, Euskadi) to visit the Book Fair (Azoka) in December 1993 was all business.

Accompanied by Luis Moreno, Director of Eusko Bibliographía, located in Gasteiz-Vitoria (Alava), Mr. Ugalde also had the pleasure of visiting Jon Bilbao and family during his trip. (Jon Bilbao was the Bibliographer at the Basque Studies Program for many years and was the founder of Eusko Bibliographía. He is currently its President.)

The Durango Book Fair was very well attended.“I was impressed,” said Mr. Ugalde, “by the large crowds in attendance.” He added, “I was probably the only person in attendance who came from such a great distance.”

Mr. Ugalde met the entire staff of Eusko Bibliographía and viewed their operation firsthand. In addition to attending the Azoka and visiting the offices of Eusko Bibliographía, Ugalde spent time meeting individual librarians and bookdealers in order to facilitate his collection development duties for the Basque library.

“The bibliographic service provided by Eusko Bibliographía and its dedicated staff is on the leading edge of technology,” said Mr. Ugalde. “I was warmly greeted and made to feel very welcome. They were all very generous with their time.” As a result, Ugalde’s trip was a smashing success.
