Basque Chair at UCSB

The José Miguel de Barandiarán Chair in Basque Studies has been established at the University of California at Santa Barbara, thanks to the generosity of the Autonomous Basque Government (Eusko Jaurlaritza) and the Federación de Cajas de Ahorros Vasco-Navarras. The founding of the Chair was celebrated on November 12, 1993 with an inaugural lecture entitled “The Basques: From Stone-Age to the Present” by Juan Bautista Avalle-Arce, the first holder of the Barandiarán Chair.

Dignitaries in attendance included Joseba Arregi (Basque Minister of Culture), Ander Manterola (President of the Jos‚ Miguel de Barandiar n Foundation), and Gloria Castresana Waid (President of the Basque American Foundation).

The Chair is housed in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and plans for the future include course offerings in Basque Studies and language, scholarship aid, colloquia, and a publication series, according to the announcement by Department Chair Harvey L. Sharrer on the Basque Culture network mailing list.

The Basque Studies Program extends congratulations to UCSB and offers a hearty “Welcome to the world of Basque Studies.”
