Basques of the Pacific Northwest

The first Basque festival, a Montana love story, and the vanishing Basque sheepherder, are all discussed in a new book now available from Idaho State University Press. The anthology is entitled Basques of the Pacific Northwest and was edited by Richard W. Etulain, professor of history and director of the Center for the American West in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Articles in the anthology cover the history and culture of Basques in the region, life stories, and overviews of Basque experiences in the West. Contributing authors include Pat Bieter, Julio Bilbao, Donald G. Burns, L.S. Cressman, Eleanor Davis, William A. Douglass, Richard W. Etulain, Sara Baker Munro, Monique Urza, and Anthony Yturri.

Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Nevada form the backdrop for these enjoyable articles about Basques and their role in this part of the New World. Basques of the Pacific Northwest is imminently readable and offers six pages of black and white photos of Basques whose lives are touched on in the book.

This 8-1/2" x 11" paperback is available for $11.95 from William N. Harwood, Director, Idaho State University Press, Campus Box 8265, Pocatello, Idaho 83209.
