An Open Letter

by Robert Laxalt

Most of you recently received a letter from me requesting donations to the Basque Studies Program. It was prompted by the fact that we have a unique opportunity to match a challenge grant in the amount of $25,000 for each of the next three years that would provide critical funding to the Basque Studies Program, and particularly the Basque-English Dictionary Project. The challenge grant will provide one dollar for each dollar raised from other sources.

I am pleased to announce that response to our initial request has been most gratifying. Approximately $12,500 has been raised to date. This means that we are halfway to our first year’s goal. At the same time, we must renew our efforts if we are to take full advantage of the challenge grant opportunity. I, therefore, ask you to please consider making a donation at this time.

I would note that a significant donation to the Program is a meaningful way to memorialize a family member. Donors who give $200 or more have the name(s) of their choice engraved on the Friends of the Basque Studies Program plaque on permanent display at the Program. Donors of $1,000 or more have an individual plaque made in their honor. However, what is more important than the amount is the fact that you consider donating something. You may use the coupon below for that purpose.

We are so grateful for the overwhelming response from Basques and friends of Basques to this – our first large-scale fundraising effort. Gifts have come to us from every part of the United States, demonstrating a firm belief in the long range goals of the Basque Studies Program. That, indeed, is heartwarming.
