University Studies in the Basque Country Consortium San Sebastián Program Approximately 40 participants depart from New York on September 3 to commence the 1985-86 Basque/Hispanic Studies Program in San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa. There the students will spend one or two semesters taking courses in Basque and Spanish language (four levels), Anthropology, History, Teacher Education, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Folkdance and Cuisine. Four faculty members affiliated with the Consortium since its inception in 1983 form the faculty nucleus: resident Director Dr. Sandra Ott and Professors Jon Bilbao, Felix Menchacatorre and Patricia O’Connor. While enrollment haws been the strongest in Consortium history, the San Sebastián Program can accommodate eight more students. Participants are accepted on a first-come, basis and interested students should submit applications as soon as possible. In addition to university students from seven states and fifteen institutions, a number of teachers, counselors and returning students will make up the 1985-86 group. Pau Program The 1985-86 French and Basque Studies Program at Pau, France begins on September 15 with a two-week artistic and historical tour of Brussels, Paris and the Basque Country. The Fall classes begin in Pau the first of October. The Pau Program is designed to provide one to three academic quarters of French language (all levels) and culture. Students wishing to study Basque language and culture are encouraged to enroll in courses offered by the Department of Basque Studies of the University of Pau. The Consortium has several openings available at this time but interested students should submit their applications as early as possible. Summer Program The six-week Summer Program will be held at the Albergue “Juan Sebastián Elcano” in Fuenterrabia, Gipuzkoa June 24-August 4. Director Jon Bilbao will offer an undergraduate/graduate level course in Basque History. Dr. Pat Bieter from Boise State University’s Department of Education will teach a course on Bilingualism/Biculturalism and an elementary Basque language course. Dr. Teresa del Valle, an anthropologist from the University of the Basque Country, will offer Old World Basque Culture and Eli Arreizaga will teach Spanish Conversation and Composition.
