University Studies in the Basque Country 1985-86

Now in its third year, the University Studies in the Basque Country Consortium is organizing the 1985-86 summer and academic year-long programs in the Basque Country of northern Spain. These programs offer a unique opportunity to earn university credit while studying and experiencing the rich cultural diversity of the Basque Country. Participation in formal and informal opportunities, such as field trips, visits to sporting and folkloric events and village festivals form an integral part of the program.

Six Week Summer Program

The 1985 Summer Studies Program offers courses in Basque culture, history and Basque and Castilian language. In addition, two education courses will be offered. The first, “Analysis of Instruction,” complements a special seminar on the bilingualism/biculturalism of the Basque region of northern Spain and southern France. This one-time only seminar will employ the region as a living laboratory to examine the historical and modern-day dynamics of a bilingual/bicultural society and the policies of the area's educational, cultural and political institutions. Participants may earn a maximum of nine graduate or undergraduate credits.

While the Summer Studies Program is of obvious utility to university students, teachers and other academically oriented individuals, the Consortium also encourages the participation of the population at large. The dates of the summer program are June 23 to August 4. Students reside in the language school/hostel “Juan Sebastián Elcano” in the fishing village of Fuenterrabia/Hondarribia located on the southern side of the French/Spanish border. Including complete room and board, round-trip airfare from New York, tuition, excursions, and insurance, cost of the program is $2,270.

Fall 1985-Spring 1986 Program

The fall semester begins with a week-long art and history segment in and around Madrid. The students will then participate in an intensive month-long language (Basque or Spanish) program in Fuenterrabia before settling into San Sebastián/Donostia for the fall and spring semesters.

As in the past, undergraduate and graduate level courses will be available in Basque history, anthropology, political science, cuisine and folkdance, as well as a full curriculum of Hispanic language, culture and literature. The 1985-86 program has also expanded its curriculum offerings. For example, students can take intensive language classes of up to five hours daily throughout the semester. Other notable additions are two Economics courses: “Economic History of Europe” and “Economic Cooperative Systems.” The latter will focus on the internationally acclaimed cooperatives of Mondragon and of the Basque region. Students may also participate in Business and ESL Practicums. In both cases, qualified students are placed in local businesses and schools.

Cost is $3,346 for the fall semester and $4,911 for the academic year.University financial aid and some scholarships are available. Available openings are filled on a first-come basis.

The University Studies in the Basque Country academic program, a consortium project of Boise State University, the University of Nevada Las Vegas, the University of Nevada Reno, and the University of the Basque Country, is open to university students throughout the United States.
