Basque Hall of Fame

On Saturday October 13, the Society of Basque Studies in America held its Fourth Annual Basque Hall of Fame Awards Reception at the Civic Auditorium Convention Center in Elko, Nevada. The Elko Euzkaldunak Basque Club hosted the event. Included on the program were performances by the Elko Basque dancers and a musical recital by pianist Joshu Gallastegui and tenor Valentin Aguirre. In attendance were noted Basque sculptors Nestor Basterrechea, Vicente Larrea and Remigio Mendiburu. Professors Emilia Doyaga, Leonard Bloom and Terrance Wilbur described the works of the sculptors which were illustrated by a slide presentation.

Inducted into the Hall of Fame were Pedro Altube, pioneer Basque settler in northeastern Nevada, Domingo Ansotegui, Basque accordionist from Boise, Idaho, and Dominique Laxalt, western Nevada sheepman. A speech about Pedro was given by an Altube descendant, Carol Hovey, who is writing a book about her family. Domingo Ansotegui was discussed by his son, Daniel. Bruce Laxalt, Dominique’s grandson, described his grandfather. All three speakers accepted plaques from the Society commemorating their forebearers’ accomplishments. Mr. José Ramon Cengotitabengoa, President of the Society, announced a project to build a monument to the Basque sheepherder somewhere in the American West to commemorate the Basque contribution to American life. Several hundred persons attended the Elko event.
