Basque Organizations Formed

The Basque Educational Organization was recently formed in San Francisco for the purpose of preserving and promoting Basque culture, language and traditions. To this end, the organizers plan to develop Basque language, theater, pelota, music and dance classes. This non-profit organization will also establish a library on Basque topics which will be accessible to interested groups and individuals. Information may be obtained from the Basque Educational Organization, P.O. Box 590950, San Francisco, CA 94159.

The United States Federation of Pelota was established to encourage public awareness of and participation in Basque pelota and to foster amateur pelota competition on the national and international levels. This non-profit Federation may be contacted at 354 Columbus Ave., San Francisco, CA 94133.

Tutorial Ph.D. in Basque Studies

This fall we instituted our tutorial Ph.D. in Basque Studies in cooperation with the departments of Anthropology, History and Foreign Languages. There were approximately ten inquiries from interested students during the pre-application phase. It was our intention to admit one or two students annually. However, the Admissions and Policy Board felt that three applicants were well qualified for the program and it was decided to admit them all. These include: Gorka Aulestia, lexicographer with the Basque Studies Program who plans to write a dissertation about the Basque bertsolari or troubador; historian José Mallea, formerly of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, who is working on the Basque presence in sixteenth century Nueva España and particularly the figure of Juan de Zumarraga; and anthropologist Germán Basterra, formerly of the University of Texas, Austin, who plans to conduct sociolinguistic fieldwork on language use in one of the Basque regions.
