Highlights

In July, Robert P. Clark of George Mason University and his wife Mirentxu Amezaga (former president of the Washington, D.C. Basque Club), visited the Basque Studies Program. Professor Clark recently published his study The Basque Insurgents – ETA, 1952-1980 (Madison: University of Wisconsin Press).

During the first two weeks in July, Professor Pierre Bidart, who holds the chair of Basque Studies at the University of Pau, visited with our staff exploring ways to strengthen ties between the Basque Studies Program and his university.

Professor José Luis Granja, historian at the Lejona campus of the University of the Basque Country and his wife Inés Valdeón were in residence with the Basque Studies Program. Their project to index our library holdings regarding Basque nationalism was supported by a grant from the University of the Basque Country.

From mid-July until late August, Professor Vicente Garmendia, chairman of the Iberian Studies department of the University of Bordeaux, was in residence analyzing our library holdings regarding New World publications on Basque topics.

From July through October, Professor Joseba Zulaika, social anthropologist at the Zorroaga campus of the University of the Basque Country, was in residence completing a book manuscript on the genesis of political violence in his natal village of Itziar, Gipuzkoa.

Ms. Jacqueline Urla, doctoral candidate in sociolinguistics of the University of California, Berkeley, was in residence during the month of July conducting library research for her dissertation. Ms. Urla will be in residence during the autumn semester as well.

In late September a program detailing the activities of the Basque Studies Program was aired on the UNR Today show of Reno television Channel 8.

In late August a paper entitled “Western European Ethnic Nationalism: An Alternate Hypothesis” by William A. Douglass was presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association in San Antonio, Texas

Carmelo Renobales, Senator from the Basque Autonomous Community to the Spanish Parliament and Spokesman of the Basque delegation, spent part of July and August in Reno. Senator Renobales was visiting his daughter Mertxe, who is a faculty member of the Biochemistry Department at UNR.

Ms. Ibone Amezaga of Algorta, Vizcaya spent the summer in Reno and worked as a volunteer for the Basque Studies Program.

In July Mr. José Ramón Cengotitabengoa, President of the Society of Basque Studies in America and Mr. Valentin Aguirre, tenor, visited Reno as part of an effort to arrange for a concert tour for Mr. Aguirre.

Robert Laxalt recently published an article entitled “Basques of the American West” in the Fall 1984 issue of Vista magazine.

Carmelo Urza, Coordinator of the University Studies in the Basque Country Consortium, recently returned from Europe after accompanying this year’s group of students to the Basque Country. Professor Richard Curry of UNRs Department of Foreign Languages will teach for the consortium during the fall semester.

Gorka Aulestia is currently teaching an advanced Basque conversation course. José Mallea is teaching the first year of elementary Basque. William A. Douglass is conducting several doctoral tutorials.

Gorka Aulestia recently published reviews of Mujika, Luis Mari: Lizardi-ren Lirika Bideak and Iratzeder (Jean Diharce): Biziaren Olerkia in World Literature Today. He also published an article, “Basque Literature,” in Vol. 4 of the Encyclopedia of World Literature in the Twentieth Century (New York: Frederick Ungar, 1984).

In August Professor James Jacob of Wright State University spent time in the Basque collection researching his forthcoming book on French Basque Nationalism.

Mr. Bernard Broustet of the newspaper Sud-Ouest of Bordeaux, France recently visited the Basque Studies Program as part of his American tour. While his main purpose for visiting the United States was to cover the recent American election, Mr. Broustet also plans to write about Basque activities in the American West.
