Symposium A symposium entitled “The ‘Nationalities’ of the Spanish State: A Cultural Problem” was organized by the Institute for the Study of Ideologies and Literature, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese (University of Minnesota) and the Program of Cultural Cooperation, Spain/United States (Ministry of Culture) to examine the study of peninsular culture in light of the “Estado de las Autonomías.” A number of intellectuals from Iberia representing the various “nationalities” gave an overview of the economic, social, political and ideological factors of each region as it attempts to define its cultural identity. The symposium also focused on the manner in which American universities have emphasized Castilian literary contributions while disregarding the production of regional authors. Ultimately, the purpose of the symposium was to enrich and modernize current professional literary criticism in the U.S., while advancing new topics and areas of investigation. The symposium was held on the University of Minnesota campus, May 24-25, 1984. In attendance were Goio Monreal, Rector; Fernando Savater, Philosopher; Carlos Blanco Aguinaga, Hispanist; and Eduardo López-Aranguren, Sociologist, all of the University of the Basque Country. A volume of the papers presented at the symposium will be published by Ideologies and Literature.
