Sheepherders of the Sierra

From April 27 through early June there was an exhibition of photographs entitled “Basque Sheepherders of the Plumas Sierra” on display at the downtown Reno gallery of the Nevada Historical Society. The exhibit contained photos of sheepherding activities, camp life and tree art of Basque herders in Plumas County, California. Included were excerpts from the life story of a pioneer Basque sheep rancher in the area. The exhibit was created by Ms. Marty Mitchell of Quincy, California and will be shown at several California locations during the coming year. Any organization interested in displaying the exhibit may contact Ms. Mitchell by writing:

Can You Help?

Ms. Teresa Baksh, 3388 Granada Ave., San Diego, CA 92104 (tel. 614-293-3481) is currently researching Basque games, particularly sports of strength such as woodchopping, weightlifting and weight carrying. Any information that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

The Basque N.A.B.O. calendar announced in the previous newsletter should have noted the photographs are in black and white rather than color.
