1984-85 USBCC: A Unique Educational Opportunity The University Studies in the Basque Country Consortium is delighted to announce the 1984-85 academic program. The Consortium is designed to provide an academic year of Basque and Hispanic studies in the midst of the rich cultural diversity of the Basque region. Through this experience, it is expected that the student will acquire fresh insight into his or her own world and into an important region of Southern France and the Northern Iberian Peninsula. The uniqueness of this program lies in its dual focus, reflecting the two cultures present in Northern Iberia. In this way the Consortium will enable the student to deepen his understanding of the Iberian Peninsula through a complete program of Spanish language, culture and history courses. At the same time, it is intended that the student come away with an understanding of the Basque Country in its own terms. To this end the Consortium will provide an academic window on the Basque people, who have contributed much to European and American history and whose cultural uniqueness is widely appreciated. These courses will be taught in English by Consortium professors utilizing teaching techniques similar to those of American universities. The Consortium also encourages students to enroll in any Universidad del País Vasco course for which they have satisfactory preparation and language fluency. Regular Consortium classes and dining halls at the Universidad del País Vasco will also provide direct contact with local students of similar interests. These academic dimensions represent only a part of the intended value of a year abroad. Participation in formal and informal opportunities, such as field trips, as well as exposure to folkdance groups and artistic associations will greatly enhance the student’s appreciation of the region and will facilitate his or her integration into the community. The USBCC represents a joint project of Boise State University, University of Nevada at Las Vegas, University of Nevada Reno, and the Universidad del País Vasco. The program is open to, and encourages the participation of, university students throughout the United States.
