Elderhostel Fifty adult students, 60 years or older, participated in an Elderhostel program hosted by the University of Nevada Reno during the week of August 21. UNR faculty gave courses on “Writers of the Purple Sage” (by Ann Ronald) and “The Joy of Fitness” (by Sherry Williams). The Basque Studies Program offered a course on “The Basques around the World,” which touched upon Old World Basque history, anthropology, and ecology as well as immigration and New World Basques. Gorka Aulestia spoke on the Basque language and Janet Inda demonstrated the art of making garlic soup and potato omelet and shared some delicious blood sausage. The adult students were also treated to a wine and cheese party, two shows at the Atmospherium Planetarium, a speaker on the subject of dreams and a final dinner with story tellers and a dance demonstration. Elderhostel is a network of over 500 educational institutions which provides older adults the opportunity for personal and academic growth, social interaction and low cost, short term residential college experience. Inquiries into future programs should be addressed to Elderhostel, 100 Boylston St., Suite 200, Boston, MA 02116. The primary language of the publication is Spanish with some articles in Basque. There may be an English version available shortly. Anyone wishing to receive Euzko-Deya or contribute items of interest to it regarding Basque activities anywhere should contact: Euzko-Deya Duque de Wellington s/n Lakua Gasteiz-Vitoria, Alava Spain Disaster Relief Many of the readers of this newsletter may not be aware of the magnitude of the recent tragic floods in the Basque Country. The disaster claimed some 50 lives, destroyed whole villages and paralyzed many industries. By all estimates, damages exceeded a billion dollars. As a consequence, more than 60,000 jobs were affected and many lost their homes. Both the Basque and Spanish governments have organized relief efforts. The Basque Government has issued a world-wide appeal for assistance directed particularly at persons of Basque descent everywhere. Anyone wishing to make a contribution to this relief effort should send donations to: Gobierno Vasco Cuenta Pro-Damnificados del País Vasco Vitoria – Gasteiz, Alava Spain |
