A New Book Series

We are pleased to announce the establishment of a new Occasional Papers Series of Basque books. The first publication is by Jean Decroos and is entitled The Long Journey: Social Integration and Ethnicity Maintenance among Urban Basques in the San Francisco Bay Region. This work, the first published study of an urban Basque community in the United States, follows the ex-herder into an urban setting. The author describes in detail the process of assimilation to the wider society and the social institutions, like ethnic festivals and voluntary associations, that facilitate the maintenance of ethnic identity. In addition to reviewing the history of the emergence of the San Francisco Basque colony, the author examines the specific characteristics of its members such as occupational specialization, language retention, and marriage patterns.

The Long Journey has been published jointly by the Basque Studies Program and Associated Faculty Press. Cost of the book is $14.00 per copy plus $1.50 for postage and handling of the first copy and .25 for each additional one. Orders should be sent to:
