Basque Events Jimmy Jausoro and Domingo Ansotegui, two Basque musicians from the Boise area, were recently given the 1983 Idaho State Folk Arts Award. Jimmy and Domingo were honored for their many years of dedication to the preservation of Basque traditions in the American West. José Altuna (member and officer of the original Basque Center of New York), Pete T. Cenarrusa (Secretary of State, Idaho) and Father Francisco de Madina (musician and composer) were recently inducted into the Basque Hall of Fame at a dinner that was co-sponsored by the Society of Basque Studies in America and Euzko-Etxea of New York City. Last April a Basque Music Night was held in Boise, Idaho sponsored by the Lynne Fereday Scholarship Memorial. The evening was dedicated to the memory of Jon Oņatibia. Jon contributed mightily to the preservation of Basque traditions in the United States through his participation in music camps held in the American West and as an instructor for the University of Nevada Basque Studies Summer Session Abroad and Boise State Universitys Year Abroad Program in Oņate. Professor Oņatibia was also recently awarded a posthumous doctorate by the Sorbonne University. Ms. Marty Mitchell recently taught a three week section on Basques in Plumas County for Feather River College in Quincy, California. A New Publication A work entitled The Ethnic American Woman: Problems, Protests, Lifestyle by Edith Blicksilver is available from Kendall/Hunt Publishing Co., 2460 Kerper Blvd., Dubuque, Iowa 52001. The cost is $14.95. The book deals with techniques for teaching about ethnicity, as well as suggested readings by and about minority authors. Can You Help? Ever lived in a Basque hotel? Researcher of the Year We are pleased to announce that Dr. William H. Jacobsen, Jr., of the English Department and Coordinator of Linguistics for the Basque Studies Program, was given UNR's Outstanding Researcher Award for 1983. Jacobsen has studied several American Indian languages (particularly Washoe and Makah) and has published a number of seminal articles on Basque as well. Congratulations, Bill. Retirements Robert Laxalt recently retired as Director of the University of Nevada Press in order to devote more time to his writing. Mr. Laxalt founded and then directed the Press for almost three decades. He was responsible for creation of the Basque Book Series. In addition to his writing, he will be giving an advanced seminar in the Department of Journalism of the University of Nevada Reno. Professor Jon Bilbao also retired at the end of the past fiscal year (June 30). He is currently in Europe directing the Institute of Basque Bibliography and teaching for the University Studies in the Basque Country Consortium.
