Study in The Basque Country

The University Studies in the Basque Country Consortium which is sponsored by Boise State University, the University of Nevada Reno and the Basque University wishes to announce that Dr. Sandra Ott will be the on-campus director of this unique program of study. She has a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from the University of Oxford where she has also served as Lecturer of Ethnology. In addition, Dr. Ott has taught Anthropology for Oxford Polytechnic, is a Research Fellow of St. Antony’s College, Oxford and has previous experience as an instructor with UNR's Basque Studies Summer Session Abroad. Having conducted field work in the Basque Country of Northern Spain and Southern France, she is well acquainted with the region and is fluent in the Basque, French and Spanish languages. Her work there has produced numerous publications, including her book on the French Basque village of Santa Grazi, The Circle of Mountains: A Basque Shepherding Community (Oxford: Clarendon Press). The consortium is indeed fortunate to have an individual of Dr. Ott’s qualifications direct its program, which is located 12 miles from the French border in the beautiful coastal city of San Sebastián.

Due to student demand, the Basque Consortium will now make a fall semester option available for the student unable to attend the regular year-long session. Including tuition and fees, round-trip fare, ten days in Madrid, excursions in the Basque Country, lodging, breakfast and dinner (full board in September in the village of Fuenterrabia), the cost for the fall semester option will be $4,100. The cost for the full academic year will remain at $6,450. The disparity between the two prices is due to fixed costs such as round-trip fare, ten days in Madrid, excursions and the intensive month-long language segment – in addition to the regular fall semester.

The University Studies in the Basque Country Consortium will offer its own fully accredited graduate and undergraduate curriculum in Basque and Spanish language and culture. These courses will be taught in English and Spanish utilizing teaching techniques similar to those of American universities. Those students with sufficient fluency in Spanish will be able to enroll in any Basque university course such as economics, computer sciences and nursing. In addition, students will be encouraged to engage in special cultural activities in conjunction with the Basque dance group Argia, the Sports Federation, the Music Conservatory, the Art School and a cooking school. The program is open to university students throughout the United States. Consortium students will be eligible for all types of Federal Financial Aid. A limited number of newly created scholarships and loans are available directly through the consortium.
