Editor's Note We are frequently asked questions about the origin and activities of the Basque Studies Program. Since we recently celebrated our fifteenth anniversary, it would seem an appropriate time to take stock. Consequently, the main article in this newsletter provides a history of the BSP. It is our belief that we are currently poised between a productive past and promising future. There have been several important developments which should profoundly shape BSP activities over the coming years. A minor in Basque Studies was approved and is now a part of the regular curriculum of the University of Nevada Reno. This means that any student, regardless of major field of interest, may pursue a coordinated program of study of the Basque language, history and culture as a part of his or her degree requirements. At the same time the University of Nevada Reno entered into a collaborative arrangement with Boise State University and the University of the Basque Country to provide students at any American university with the opportunity to spend a semester or year abroad studying in San Sebastián. Last autumn UNR submitted all of its departments, divisions and programs to comprehensive review by outside consultants who then made recommendations regarding the future direction of the institution. As a result of this process, the university identified certain centers of excellence which were then earmarked for enhancement. We are pleased to announce that the Basque Studies Program was regarded as one of UNRs outstanding endeavors. Several new initiatives are currently being considered, including a possible tutorial Ph.D. program in Basque Studies and a visiting Basque professorship. The Newsletter of the Basque Studies Program is published twice annually and is sent free of charge to any interested person. If you know of someone who would like to receive future issues, please send his or her name and address to: Coordinator, Basque Studies Program, University of Nevada Library, Reno, NV 89557-0012. |
