University Studies in the Basque Country Consortium

Boise State University and the University of Nevada Reno, in collaboration with the Basque University system, are delighted to announce the formation of a consortium designed to provide an academic year (Sept.-June) of Basque and Spanish language and cultural studies in the Basque Country. The program is open to, and encourages the participation of university students throughout the United States.

Between October 1983 and June 1984, the program will be located in San Sebastián, Guipúzcoa where Consortium professors will offer a wide selection of Basque related courses. These will include Basque Language instruction, Basque History, Old World Basque Culture, and other related topics. Instruction will be in English.

At the same time a complete program of Hispanic studies will be offered in which Consortium courses are supplemented with regular course offerings at the San Sebastián campus of the Basque University. Students registering in the Hispanic program of study will be expected to have sufficient knowledge of Spanish to understand lectures in the language. The Consortium student will also be able to enroll in the artistic associations of San Sebastián: painting, sculpture, music, dance, etc. The student will have the option of living with a family or in a modern hotel residence which will provide breakfast and dinner.

There will be a September orientation and intensive language component held in a smaller Basque town. During this first month of the program, the students will lodge (full board), as a group, in comfortable residences.

Current projections indicate that he cost of program (including: tuition and fees, round-trip airfare, lodging, breakfast and dinner – full board in September – excursions and insurance) will be between $5,500 and $6,500, depending on enrollment and exchange rate. Economically, this program compares very favorably with tuition and room and board at many US institutions ($8,000-$14,000) and is more economical than most study abroad programs. Some scholarship and student loan aid will be available.

We believe that this program promises to be a source of exceptional academic opportunity for American students.
