1981 Basque Studies Summer Session Abroad

The Basque Studies Program will be conducting its fifth study tour of the Basque Country this coming summer. Departure from San Francisco is scheduled for June 19. The return flight will leave Paris on August 14. The Program consists of class instruction (see below), excursions to festivals (including the famed San Fermin festival in Pamplona), and points of interest throughout the Basque Country, folk singing and dancing, attendance at cultural and sporting events, and guest lecturers.

At the conclusion of the six-week period of instruction, participants will have two weeks for independent travel (living expenses during this time are not included in the price of the program) prior to the return charter flight in August. Estimated cost of the trip is $2,200 which includes round trip airfare from the west coast, instructional costs, excursions, and room and board during the six weeks of class.

Instruction is in English. Courses, with the exception of Elementary Basque Language, may be taken for graduate or undergraduate credit. All courses may be audited. A maximum of seven semester credits may be earned in a combination of the following tentative course offerings:

Elementary Spoken Basque – 4 credits
Basque History – 3 credits
Old World Basque – 3 credits
Intro to Basque Linguistics – 3 credits
    (Prerequisite: permission of instructor)
Intro to Basque Literature – 3 credits
Independent Study – 1 credit

It is expected that more financial aid, both in the form of student loans and scholarships, will be available than in the past. Enrollment is limited and reservations are accepted in order of receipt. As the Basque Studies Program conducts these tours only once every three years, those interested are advised to make early application.
