Highlights We would like to thank Mrs. M.D.C. Gallop, widow of folklorist Rodney Gallop, for the generous donation of nearly 100 volumes from her late husband’s library to the Basque Studies Program. We feel very fortunate to receive this collection as it provides us with a second copy of rare, out-of-print books. In addition to books, the collection contains photographs and some sheet music. Adjunct Professor Sandra Ott presented a public lecture in February entitled, “Aristotle Among the Basques: The Cheese Analogy of Conception.” She also addressed the University of Nevada Anthropology Department colloquium. Her husband, Dr. Peter Riviere of Oxford University, also addressed the Anthropology colloquium on the topic of Amazonian Indians. Professor Ott’s lecture was sponsored by the Basque Studies Program and the University of Nevada Department of Anthropology. It was supported by a grant from the Council for European Studies. Mr. Cyrus E. Zirakzadeh, graduate student from the University of California, Berkeley, spent two weeks during April 1980 in the Basque Studies Program library doing research for his Ph.D. thesis on Basque nationalism 1976 to the present. Adjunct Professor Dorothy Legarreta spent a couple of days with the Basque Studies staff in June following her return from a research trip to the Basque Country. Parks Canada research team member Oriana Barkham spent June 8 through July 3, 1980 investigating 16th century Basque shipping, shipbuilding and whaling technology. Her research will assist Parks Canada in their efforts to salvage a sunken whaling vessel discovered off the coast of Labrador near Red Bay. James E. Jacob, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Wright State University in Ohio spent the summer in Reno working on a manuscript, Basque Nationalism in France, which he plans to submit to the University of Nevada Press Basque Book Series. His research was supported in part by the Development Advisory Council and the Research Advisory Board of the University of Nevada Reno. Assistant Coordinator Darlene Ammons spent six weeks in the Basque country attending an intensive study program in the Basque language, meeting with groups, and visiting with institutions which are working to develop instructional material on the Basque language and culture. |
