Boise State’s Campus in Oñate, Spain Boise State is sponsoring its fifth year abroad program in the town of Oñate (Guipúzcoa). The program is designed to develop language proficiency in Basque and/or Spanish and to introduce the student to Basque culture and history. Students receive regular academic credit for the program. In addition to the opportunity to live in a small Basque town, tours to points of historic and cultural interest will be provided. The approximate cost for the period September 1980 to May 1981 is $3,700. The Hilliard Committee has pledged support to bring Gorka Aulestia to the Basque Studies Program to prepare a 60,000 word Basque/English – English/Basque dictionary. The dictionary will feature dialect variants representative of dialects spoken in the American West, as well as the United Basque (Euskara Batua) forms. The Spanish Treaty Grant has been renewed for $25,000 to continue our study of the 19th Century Basque Immigration to the American West. The search through local archives throughout the West will expand to include eastern Oregon and southern Idaho. The cooperating Spanish institution, Universidad de Deusto, is researching the economic, political and social organization of 19th century Basque society. The Research Advisory Board has committed $3,200 and the National Science Foundation $62,390 for a comparative study of Southern Italian and Basque sugar cane cutters in Queensland. The study will test the hypothesis that Old World background has an effect on adaptation to a New World host environment. As a result, Bill Douglass will be in Australia from mid-February until early December during 1980. Distinguished Visitors During the week of January 13-19, Dr. Gregorio Monreal, acting President of the Universidad del País Vasco; Mr. Pedro Sancristoval, Cultural Minister of the Province of Alava; and Mr. Gentza Belausteguigoitia, Vice President of the Diputación of the Province of Alava, visited the University of Nevada Reno to discuss ways of creating working relationships between our institution and the newly formed Basque University. President Joseph Crowley, the deans of the Colleges of Agriculture, Education, Mining and the Graduate School, as well as several individual faculty members, met with the delegation. A wide range of possibilities were discussed including student and faculty exchange programs. It was also decided that Professor Jon Bilbao of the Basque Studies Program would henceforth divide his time equally between Reno and Europe. While in Europe he will be based in Vitoria where he will create an Institute of the Basque Diaspora. It was a pleasure and privilege to host such distinguished visitors. We are confident that the exchange will lead to many exciting future developments of benefit to all concerned. We are particularly optimistic that the new ties will further Basque Studies both in the United States and in the Basque Country. Aurrera!
