Basque Studies Program Newsletter · Issue 21, 1979

Goian Bego

From its beginning the Basque Studies Program has been fortunate in its friends – people near and far who extended themselves on our behalf. But there was only one Jon Oñatibia.

No one in the Basque Country has been so instrumental in the success of our programs. Incomparable teacher of Basque, premier musician, writer, folk dance enthusiast – there were few so talented, so generous, and so loving. He was often with us here in Reno, most recently in 1977 at the dedication of our new quarters. But it was as the prime figure in our summer programs that Jon will best be remembered. From its inception in 1970 the Basque Studies Summer Session Abroad was Jon Oñatibia. He brought a sparkling and infectious enthusiasm for the Basque language, music and dance. A joyous phase ended Saturday, June 30, 1979, when Jon died following an auto accident.

All of us whose hearts and minds will never again be gladdened at the sight and sound of this amazing man, mourn him. Agur, Jon. Ez gara astuko.

New Assistant Coordinator of Basque Studies

In September Ms. Darlene Ammons joined the staff of the Basque Studies Program, replacing Virginia Jacobsen as Assistant Coordinator. Ms. Ammons comes to us from the University of Chicago, where she has completed all of her coursework for a Ph.D. in the Department of Linguistics. Her dissertation topic is Basque dialectology. While at Chicago, she was an administrative aide to the Director of Development for the Graduate School of Business. She has an MA from the University of Nevada, Reno in English and was formerly employed as the administrative assistant of the Nevada Humanities Committee. Darlene, therefore, brings a wealth of academic and administrative experience to her new position with the Basque Studies Program.

Photo Exhibit

“Basque Sheepherders; End of an Era,” Richard Lane’s exhibit of still life photographs, will make its Reno debut on January 5, 1980 at the Sierra Nevada Museum, 549 Court Street, Reno, Nevada. The premier showing was held at the Northern Nevada Museum in Elko from June 26 to July 31, 1979. On August 25-26, the exhibit was displayed at the Basque Festival in San Francisco. Recently, the collection traveled to Stockton, California for the October 13, 1979 meeting of the Central California Woolgrowers Association. Groups interested in sponsoring a showing of the photographs should write to the Basque Studies Program for information.

Adjunct Professors

We are pleased to announce that the Board of Regents of the University of Nevada System recently approved the appointments of three adjunct professors to the staff of Basque Studies Program. These include Dr. Sandra Ott of Oxford, England, Dr. Dorothy Legarreta of Mills College, and Dr. Constancio Castro of the University of Caracas. All have previously worked with our collection and are currently engaged in Basque-related research projects.
