Highlights

Photo-archivist Richard H. Lane has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in support of his project to photo-document the Basque sheepherder in the American West.

There is an article about “Pedro Altube” (pp. 26-27) by Jon Bilbao in Howard R. Lamar, ed., The Reader’s Encyclopedia of the American West (New York: Thomas Y. Crowell, Co., 1978).

Robert Laxalt writes of “New Mexico's Mountains of Mystery” in the September 1978 issue of the National Geographic Magazine (vol. 154:3, pp. 416-436).

Virginia C. Jacobsen gave a presentation to the participants of the 16th Annual Northern California–Western Nevada Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in March at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Mr. Iban Bilbao arrived in Reno in October to take up residence with the Basque Studies Program. A lawyer, he will be doing research for the doctoral dissertation on Basque law for the Universidad de Deusto (Bilbao, Spain).

We are grateful to the Laxalt family for establishing a fund for Basque studies during their recent bereavement. The fund will be used to establish, in memory of Terese Laxalt, an occasional papers publication series on Basque topics.
