Banco de Vizcaya Gives Support to Photographic Project The Banco de Vizcaya, one of the major financial institutions in Spain, has recently provided support for a Basque Studies Program project—the photo-documentation of the Basque sheepherder in the American West. Through its New York agency, one of its many New World branches, the bank officially notified the Program in late February that it was providing the entire requested sum of $5,050 toward the effort. The project, initiated by Basque Studies Program photo- archivist / anthropologist Richard H. Lane, was begun in January of 1977. Dr. Lane, who originally conceived the project during a period of doctoral research (1969-72) in northeastern Nevada, has been devoting his time exclusively to this work, photographing the remaining Basque herders on sheep ranches throughout the west. Because of the continuing decline in immigration of Basques for herding, this may well be the last opportunity to record on film the life conditions of the Basque sheepherder. As this was an experience of major importance to the development of the Basque communities in the United States, it is a part of every Basque-American’s heritage. It is also a subject of considerable relevance to the history of the American West. The contribution of the Banco de Vizcaya will enable Lane to continue his work in the months ahead, and the Basque Studies Program, at this time, wishes to acknowledge with gratitude, the Banco de Vizcaya’s recognition of the urgency of this project with its generous financial support. |
