Basque Studies Summer Session Abroad

We will be conducting our fourth study tour of the Basque country this coming summer. A departure from the west coast within the last ten days of June is expected. The program will consist of class instruction (see below), excursions to festivals (including the famed San Fermín festival in Pamplona) and points of interest throughout the Basque country, folk singing and dancing lessons, cultural and sporting events, and gust lectures.

At the conclusion of the six-week period of instruction participants will have two weeks for independent travel (not included in price of program) prior to the return flight in August. Estimated cost of the 1978 program is $1600 (round trip airfare from the west coast, excursions, room & board for about six weeks, and instructional costs). Tentative course offerings are:

Old World Basque Culture (Anthropology/Basque 366/566). 3 credits
Elementary Spoken Basque (FLL 150B). 4 credits
Introduction to Basque Linguistics (Anthropology/Basque 455/655). 3 credits
Basque History (History 428/628). 3 credits
Independent Study (FLL 495/695B). 1 credit. The focus of this course will be on the Basque folksong.

Instruction is in English. Courses, with the exception of Elementary Basque, may be taken for graduate or undergraduate credit. All courses may be audited. A maximum of seven semester credits are allowed.

As the Program conducts these study tours only once every three years, those interested are advised to make early application. Enrollment is limited. Contact the Program for application forms.
