Highlights In residence during the month of August was Professor Constancio Castro of the University of Venezuela (Caracas). Dr. Castro was based with the Program while he conducted preliminary research on the spatial distribution of Basques in the American West. Jon Bilbao was awarded a UNR Research Advisory Board grant to conduct research in Hong Kong and the Philippines in May-June of this year. He surveyed sources for a study of the role of the Basques in Philippine history, and the influence of the Philippine Basque and non-Basque nationalists on the development of political nationalism in the Basque homeland. William A. Douglass returned in June from several months in Australia researching Basque and South Italian immigrants in North Queensland. Prior to his return he joined Jon Bilbao in the Philippines in his survey of research sources there. The Nevada State Council on the Arts renewed its grant to the Basque Studies Program for Basque music research during the summer of 1977. Robert Herman replaced Jon Bilbao as project coordinator for this period. Since October 1 the project has been supported by a grant from the Gannett Foundation. Mrs. Elena Clayeta Talbott, who has provided considerable information on Basque history in her area to the Basque Studies Program, was recently honored for her years of service on the Los Banos Area Parks and Recreation Commission. Elena Talbott Park was dedicated September 30, 1977. William A. Douglass’ 1973 article for Natural History, “Lonely Lives Under the Big Sky,” has been reprinted in Halsey P. Taylor and V.N. Okada (eds.), The Craft of the Essay (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1977). Elementary Basque (FLL 150B, 4 credits) is being offered on the Reno campus this fall. It is jointly taught by Americo Chiarito, Assistant Catalog Librarian, and Teaching Fellow Gorka Aulestia. Basque Words, a 2600-word vocabulary (Basque-English, English-Basque) prepared by Americo Chiarito, is now available from the Program at $1.50 each. |
