Basque Music Project

A new project to study and preserve Basque folk music has recently been funded by the Nevada State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment of the Arts. Dr. Robert Herman, a musicologist working with the Basque Studies Program, is seeking tapes of American Basques singing songs remembered from the Basque Country or handed down from first-generation immigrants. The tapes are to be preserved as a living library for the benefit of researchers and other interested in Basque music.

Tapes should be sent to the Basque Studies Program and marked to the attention of Dr. Herman. All tapes sent will be duplicated and returned promptly to the sender unless the sender specifies that the Basque Studies Program may retain the original, in which case a blank tape will be furnished as a replacement. When sending tapes, please be sure to indicate song titles, and, if possible, when, where and from who the songs were learned. We hope our readers will respond.
